The men of Thapelo Institute, lead by Joseph Harrington who manages activities of the organization, hosted a celebration for the founder of the group, Dr. Terry Mason. Dr. Mason has been appointed by Richard Daley, Mayor City of Chicago, as the Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Health. The Master of Ceremony Art Norman, NBC5 news anchor, graciously
introduced family, friends and professional acquaintances who told stories of their relationship with Dr. Mason.

The event was described as "Black History in the Making" which was realized by the presence of three leaders of government from the State of Illinois, Cook County, and the City of Chicago all of which are Black Men. The event was held at the beacon college for health professions, Malcolm X College. The college offers more health profession career programs than any other institution of higher learning in the State of Illinois.
