Scenes from the free 2004 African American Male
Health & Fitness Experience

In 2004 in response to the troubling statistics regarding the health status of African American men, t he Thapelo Institute, Inc. established its Brother 2 Brother Project (B 2 B). More than just another health fair or a one-time-effort, B 2 B is a unique, long-term project. Building on the “ Working HARD ( Healthcare that Addresses Racial and Ethnic Disparities)” program model established by Dr. Trent Haywood, the goal of the project is to influence and change negative behaviors that contribute to the development of illness and disease. B 2 B will provide project participants with knowledge and information about specific lifestyle changes that can improve their health and longevity. A key component of the project is an Annual African American Male Health & Fitness Experience.

Picking up on the message, “ Brother, brother, brother, there's far too many of you dying ”, in the Marvin Gaye's classic “ What's Going On ” we have chosen it as the theme for the event. This event provides the opportunity to impart the knowledge and skills needed to effect positive behavior change. The event stresses personal responsibility and emphasizes the important the role of proper nutrition and regular physical activity in maintaining health and well being.
